A Little Info on Concussions

So why is there so much talk about concussions? This has become a very hot topic issue over the last several years especially in such sports as rugby, boxing and especially American football. While for years concussion were known to happen the severity and consequences were never really understood. First let us look at what a concussion truly is. Also known as a traumatic brain injury, they are caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or neck. During a sporting event this occurs when the athlete takes  a direct blow to the head or is hit and causes a whipping motion of the head. When this injury occurs the brain violently moves around in the skull and can cause bruising, swelling and/or rupture of arteries around the brain.  

After the injury this causes a decrease in normal function of the brain which results in memory loss, unconsciousness, nausea, vomiting and headaches. If the symptoms are caught early and treated appropriately most of the time the athlete will recovery with little to no further issues. However, if the individual doesn’t not have proper care or continues to suffer from concussions permanent damage or risk of death could be possible.
